Dr. Kirk Langstrom is Man-Bat, a tragic figure from DC Comics. A zoologist specializing in bats, Langstrom sought to cure his own encroaching deafness.
He developed an extract based on bat DNA, believing it could restore his hearing. However, upon injecting himself, he transformed into a grotesque, bat-like creature: Man-Bat. The serum granted him enhanced strength, flight, and echolocation, but at the cost of his human intellect and appearance.
Man-Bat first appeared in *Detective Comics* #400 in 1970. Initially a mindless monster, the character has undergone various iterations, sometimes regaining his human intellect, and sometimes battling for control against his bestial instincts.
